United States of America: Publications and Research Intern - China /East Asia

Position Summary

The Research Intern will have the opportunity to become centrally involved in diverse activities associated with the research, production, and dissemination of East Asia and China-related analysis, particularly an innovative special report on China and the monthly China Media Bulletin newsletter. Assigned duties will depend on the particular needs of each project during different stages of the publication cycle, as well as the prior experiences and skills of the intern. This position is based in New York and reports to the Senior Research Analyst for East Asia and the Vice President for Research. This is an unpaid internship that will last approximately 18 weeks during the fall/winter with an option to extend it into the spring for an additional 8 weeks.

Desired Qualifications

  • Intern must be enrolled in an accredited college or university and able to receive academic credit or fulfill an academic requirement
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; Master’s degree, or graduate school experience may be necessary for the level of research needed
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing
  • Fluency in Mandarin Chinese, both orally and in reading, including the ability to translate brief texts from Chinese to English; knowledge of Tibetan or Uighur welcome.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting research in the fields of political science, media studies, human rights, law, or international affairs, particularly with regards to China/East Asia.
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision
  • Strong ability to ask questions, learn, and work in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality regarding all aspects of work at all times
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite, specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Some Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct Internet research in Chinese and English for completion of an upcoming Freedom House special report to be published in December 2016
  • Conduct research, writing, data entry, and administrative activities in support of the China Media Bulletin
  • Prepare summaries of materials gathered through research
  • Other administrative duties and responsibilities as assigned.
